5 Reasons Why Running Is the Best
Everyone has “that friend” who goes out and runs 10 miles a day, loves it, looks amazing, and acts like it’s no big deal. How does running come so naturally to them? Why is it fun for them but such a grind when I try to run my measly 20 minutes on a treadmill? It’s true, running can be difficult, but the benefits can be well worth it. Here are some reasons why running takes the cake for best form of exercise.
Get cardio and strength training
Obviously, we know running gives you great cardio and is great for burning calories, but what you haven’t realized is that running for 30 minutes is also a 30-minute ab session. Every time you lift those legs, you’re using your abdominal and oblique muscles. In addition, believe it or not, pumping your arms works your deltoids, pecs and lats. Want an even better muscle workout while running? Carry 5 pound weights and swing those while you go. This article has some great info on how cardio and strength training work together to make you lose weight.
Build healthy bones.
When you run, your bones can take a beating. But is that a bad thing? Experts say not really. The pounding actually stimulates your cells to get rid of old bone and replace it with brand new bone. This process happens much more rapidly in runners, which gives them dense healthy bones that will carry well into old age and prevent osteoporosis and other bone degenerating diseases. Obviously there must be moderation in all things, so don’t go run 12 miles right now. Moderate regular running does the trick just fine.
Prepare for the future.
Most of us run so we can look good right now. While that is important and an awesome benefit, it’s equally important to run now so you feel good later. Old age is coming sooner than most of us would like, and it’s important to take steps to insure a healthier and happier future. Along with strong bones, the work your heart is doing right now will carry through the years as well. Running helps get rid of plaque buildup in your vasculature, which will contribute to heart attacks and heart failure if you’re not careful. Running keeps your blood pressure in check, helps recycle nutrients, and gets rid of toxin buildup in your body. Trust me—your 70-year-old self is already thanking you.
Get out and go places.
There are times that running outside doesn’t always work (unless you live in southern California, in which case, shame on you for not taking advantage of it!) But if at all possible, get out and see cool things. There are almost always cool trails and paths in every city if you look hard enough. If you have your set route that you run every single day and that works for you, great. But for a lot of us, that’s the main reason we don’t end up going. It sounds like a boring drudge. It’s ok to drive somewhere, get out and run around, and then drive home. Go run around a lake, find a waterfall, run to your favorite coffee shop, etc. Just make it fun for you.
Sometimes looking good is the only good enough motivation, and that’s okay. As this article points out, running really is the best way to get rid of that tiny extra layer right around your waist. Combine that ab workout with burning calories, and you have a perfect combo for burning fat in your midsection. Eating right helps a lot too, but running is the way to truly get where you want to be and not be so overly nit-picky with your diet.
Everyone is at a different stage when it comes to running. Some of us have been good runners in the past but have let ourselves go. Some of us have never really tried. Some of us know we need to and just need a little push. Whatever stage you’re in, the key is to just go out and start today. The beauty of it is that it doesn’t matter how fast, how slow, how far, or how long—running is running. Realize that getting healthy is not an overnight thing. It takes time. Running is the same way. It might not be very fun today. It might not even be fun for the first week. But give yourself a chance. Let your body get into a groove, and I promise you will see benefits. You and your body will be happy and healthy.
